'A Good Year' For The Arts In St. Louis

The arts community in St. Louis offers a wide variety of performances and venues with music, art, theater, dance, and more.

As we continue our “A Good Year” series, host Steve Potter talked with Vince Schoemehl, President of Grand Center, Inc., and Cynthia Prost, President of the Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis, about why it was a “good year” for the arts.

"A Good Year" for the arts discussion

In addition to a wide ranging discussion with guests, we asked our listeners to contribute their highlights.

Some of that feedback is below.

Facebook Comments:

Lesia: I live within walking distance of the Muny. I didn't go until this past summer. I saw "Dreamgirls" with Jennifer Holliday and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." I didn't know how much I wanted to see musicals until this summer. I can hardly wait to see what happens next year!

Phil: The (best thing to happen in the arts in St. Louis) was the start of a four year production of Wagner's Ring Cycle at Union Avenue Opera.

E-mails:

Allison: As a concert junkie, I love smaller intimate venues.  I have long believed St. Louis has some great spaces for small shows but continually saw Chicago draw more appealing acts.

However, this year marks the first in many that I was thrilled about the concerts St Louis was able to book. The Magnetic Fields at the Sheldon was an experience that was unmatched by any concert experience I've had. I look forward to see how Cherokee moves forward with the Luminary's move to the neighborhood.

Jean: Ste. Genevieve marked a major anniversary in October, celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Ste. Genevieve Art Colony which involved notable St. Louis artists.

The contemporary art community also continued to grow, with a record membership in the local art guild, monthly art walks and special art events, and new gallery spaces... making the town a significant art destination just an hour south of St. Louis.
