Hartford, Ill. Residents Sue over Pool of Gas

By AP/KWMU

Hartford, Ill. – Residents of the Metro-East industrial town of Hartford are suing two oil companies because there's a pool of gasoline beneath their homes.

Premcor and Apex are named in the suits, and are blamed for a four million gallon pool of gas.

The suit seeks a cleanup plan and an unspecified amount of money for medical checkups and treatment, as well as lost property values.

Illinois' Attorney General, Lisa Madigan, has also sued to force a cleanup.

Premcor Refining Group and Apex Oil Company are the successive owners of a now-closed refinery blamed that's blamed for the gas deposit.

Officials for the companies did not immediately respond to media requests for comment. But when Madigan filed the state's lawsuit in May, Premcor said other area refineries should also be held accountable.
