ST. LOUIS – An excessive heat warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. this evening.
Dangerously high heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees will continue through late Tuesday afternoon, primarily in the more urbanized portions of the warning area.
The effects of high heat are cumulative. Highest heat index values of 105 to 108 are forecast Tuesday afternoon. Several days of heat index values above 104 can be just as dangerous as one or two days of higher heat index values. Each day excessive heat continues will put additional stress on the body.
It is important that residents in the warning area use precautionary measures regarding the heat. Use air conditioning in your house or apartment if it is working correctly. If you do not have air conditioning keep your house or apartment ventilated with fans, try to spend some time in an area that has air conditioning.
Check on family, friends, neighbors and the elderly. Call and knock on doors to make sure they are dealing with the heat appropriately. Check on pets, do not leave them outside for long periods of time and make sure they have plenty of water.
Limit outside recreational and work activities. If you have to be outside, avoid poorly ventilated areas and prolonged exposure to the sun. Drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated.
