High water poses danger to swimmers, boaters

By Bill Raack, St. Louis Public Radio

St. Louis – With rivers and streams out of their banks in many places in Missouri, boaters and swimmers are being urged to use caution this Memorial Day Weekend.

Some rivers have receded following spring floods, but that's not the case everywhere. Captain Jerry Callahan with the Missouri State Water Patrol said boaters need to be prepared for faster currents.

"What people have to worry about basically is anytime that water can meet a fixes object it creates dangerous turbulence in the water and also there's a danger of boat becoming pinned or a person becoming pinned in or around those fixed objects," Callahan said.

Callahan said the higher water can also mean hidden undercurrents that can be dangerous for swimmers and others who wade into rivers and streams.
