St. Louis – Missouri Governor Bob Holden said concealed weapons will not be permitted in state office buildings.
In St. Louis Monday the governor announced new administrative rules that go beyond the soon-to-be-enacted concealed carry law.
"Our current law bans weapons in state buildings," Holden said. "However the members of the Missouri General Assembly failed to provide this necessary public protection in the conceal carry law they authorized."
Holden said law enforcement officials are exempt from the rule.
Even though there are laws on the books that prohibit weapons in state buildings, Maj. Mark Tulgetske with the Jefferson County Sheriff's office said the Governor's action is not redundant.
"All he's doing is setting security on an independent place," Tulgetske said. "The law allows you to set specific locations. You post them accordingly, or you put into effect a policy."
Concealed carry will prohibit guns in schools, casinos and more than a dozen other places. The new law takes effect Saturday.
