Home Rule to be Discussed Saturday

By Tom Weber, KWMU

St. Louis – There will be another meeting Saturday morning to decide whether St. Louis's city government should change, now that it has home rule.

Home rule allows just city voters, but not the whole state, to re-work government structure.

Former Alderman Mike Jones with Advance St. Louis said the potential for such a big change means public input is a must.

"You can't have six or seven people in a back room devising a system that does not engage a public in a way that makes your outcomes legitimate," Jones said. "It's a guaranteed recipe for failure, no matter how good the idea is when you start."

Jones made his comments this week on KWMU's St. Louis on the Air. The meeting starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at Forest Park Community College.

Advance St. Louis is also looking for citizens to serve on an assembly that will decide whether to put proposed changes to voters.
