St. Louis, MO – The Humane Society said this morning (Thu.) that it has finalized an agreement to become the new owners of a couple dozen horses that were involved in a trailer crash on I-44 in September.

The horses were in a trailer bound for a slaughter facility in Illinois when it overturned near Sullivan. In all, 25 horses and a mule survived the wreck, though one has since died. Two pregnant horses also have since miscarried.

The agency gets custody in exchange for not seeking reimbursement from the owners for rescuing and treating the animals.

Private donations are being sought, however, to help fray a tab that has already passed $84,000.
