'Idol' Hopefuls Converge on Edward Jones Dome

By Tom Weber, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Thousands of people turned land near the Edward Jones Dome into a campground this weekend.

They were lining up early to try out for the reality TV show "American Idol." The show awards a recording contract to the winner.

Samuel Ward drove his grandson Michael from Kansas City, Kan. to the tryouts. The elder Ward says he had fun, despite sleeping on concrete for two days. "I want to see maybe his dream will come true," Ward said Sunday.

"In the day, I never had a voiced as blessed as he has and maybe it might take him somewhere. So I'm going to see if I can help him out, go with him, and who knows?!"

Tryouts continue Monday.
