IL Officials Will Monitor ESL Election Today

By Tom Weber, KWMU

East St. Louis, Ill. – The Illinois Attorney General's office will have monitors in East St. Louis today to watch over the election for mayor.

Current Councilman Eddie Jackson faces former mayor Carl Officer. Officer was mayor from 1979-1991; he requested state and federal officials monitor the election, claiming possible corruption.

Current mayor Debra Powell is not on the ballot because she lost in February's primary election.

Voters will cast ballots in local races and referenda throughout Illinois today.
