Aurora, Ill. – Despite soaring crude oil prices, the cost of gasoline in Illinois is coming down.
Nicole Niemi of the Aurora-based AAA Chicago Motor Club says it's an unusual situation.
The increase in crude oil prices in the spring resulted in a 20-cent jump in retail gasoline prices in Illinois
But refineries have high inventories now, especially of summer-grade gasoline. That has to be used up soon, and demand is slackening.
According to AAA's monthly survey, the average gasoline price in Illinois is $1.90 per gallon. That's down three cents from July, but still 27 cents higher than August of last year.
