Illinois Rep. Wants Gun Exemption for Self Defense

By AP/KWMU

Springfield, Ill. – A state representative from southern Illinois is proposing legislation that would override local handgun bans when the guns are used in self-defense.

Representative John Bradley argues that a man from the Chicago suburb of Wilmette had a right to shoot an intruder in his home, regardless of a local ban on handguns.

The Marion Democrat says its important to make sure that Illinoisans have the right to defend themselves and their property.

He proposed the legislation this week.

Bradley says authorities are wrong in prosecuting Hale DeMar for violating Wilmette's handgun ban and for failing to renew an Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification card.

DeMar made headlines when he shot a burglar who returned to his home less than 24 hours after he first broke into the residence.
