Jesuits Issue Apology and $185,000 to Settle Abuse Case

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis, Mo. – A former St. Louis University High School student who says he was sexually abused by a priest who was a counselor at the school has settled the case for $185,000.

Kevin O'Connor says Father Jack Campbell abused him in 1969 while he was a sophomore at the school.

David Clohessy, director of the Survivors Network of Those Abused By Priests, says O'Connor is one of a number of boys who say Father Campbell victimized them.

"This was not a one-time, late at night, drunken act of a man who simply crossed a boundary. This was a calculated, scheming, manipulative kind of abuse," Clohessy said. "That leads us to believe, of course, that there are other people who Fr. Jack Campbell molested. We would love to be proven wrong."

The Missouri Province of Jesuits has resolved 13 cases of sexual abuse allegations against Father Campbell, who is now 83-years-old and lives in Colorado.
