Kirkwood, Mo. – On Sunday the city of Kirkwood dedicated a memorial walkway for the six public servants killed in a shooting rampage two years ago.
A disgruntled resident, Charles "Cookie" Thornton, stormed a council meeting on February 7, 2008 and killed police officer Thomas Ballman, sergeant William Biggs, council members Connie Karr and Michael Lynch, and public works director Michael Yost.
Mayor Mike Swoboda was injured in the shooting and died later in the year from complications.
Kirkwood Mayor Art McDonnell says the walkway just north of city hall honors those who died and gives residents a peaceful place to visit.
"After the incident we all wanted to find a way to honor those of our friends and great public servants that we lost in some meaningful way and I think we achieved that."
The new walkway connects the Veterans' Memorial Walkway in downtown Kirkwood to McEntee Memorial Park.
Benches along the path honor each of the six killed at city hall.
