Kirkwood to mark the one year anniversary of shootings

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The city of Kirkwood is planning to remember this February's deadly shootings in city hall.

Charles "Cookie" Thornton shot and killed five city of Kirkwood officials and police officers in a city hall rampage on the night of February 7. Two others, including Mayor Mike Swoboda, were also wounded in the attack. Swoboda subsequently died after recovering from his gunshot wounds.

The city is now planning to hold a Remembering Ceremony on Saturday, February 7, 2009, on the steps of Kirkwood City Hall. It will be open to the public and will feature a choir and members of the Kirkwood Ministerial Alliance.

In addition, there are plans in the works for a memorial walkway to be built near city hall in honor of those who died in the shootings.
