Labor Department plans hearing on rock dust danger

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Department of Labor will hold a hearing in St. Louis that could set new safety standards for miners.

The public hearing Tuesday will look at dangers from rock dust that can build up in mine shafts. At certain concentrations the dust can explode.

The hearing could help set new federal safety standards for the amount of rock dust allowed in underground mines. Tuesday's hearing is the first of four on the topic.

The hearing will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Marriott St. Louis Airport hotel.
