MADD Wants All MO Cities to Ban Open Alcohol in Cars

By AP/KWMU

St. Charles, MO – The group Mothers Against Drunk Driving says it will try to get other cities in Missouri to do what St. Charles did this week.

The City Council there voted to ban passengers in cars from carrying open alcohol.

State law bans drivers from drinking, but says nothing about passengers.

Efforts to ban passenger drinking statewide have repeatedly failed in Jefferson City amid opposition from Anheuser-Busch. The St. Louis brewer maintains the state already has the laws needed to crack down on drunken driving.

According to MADD, Missouri is among 14 states that doesn't have a law regarding open containers of alcohol. The others are Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming
