St. Louis, MO – The man who installed the last piece of the Gateway Arch has died. William Quigley was operating the crane on October 28, 1965 that hoisted the final section of stainless steel into place.
He also helped build Busch Stadium;Quigley died Wednesday at the age of 69. He had lived in O'Fallon and died of kidney failure.
Quigley worried that if he dropped that last section of the Arch, more people would remember his name. But he got the job done on the first try.
His work also included a role in the building of Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals.
A funeral Mass will be Saturday morning at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Dardenne, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Florissant.
