Mayor Announces South City Shopping Development

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The former Famous Barr site in South St. Louis will soon become a shopping center.

Mayor Francis Slay and other city officials announced Wednesday a $30-million plan to develop the 10-acre lot at Kingshighway and Chippewa.

The mayor says South St. Louis has a large, but untapped retail market.

Cleveland-based Developers Diversified Realty, DDR, will build the 97-thousand square-foot center and line up tenants.

$7.5 million in Tax Increment Financing is also part of the plan. That needs official approval from the Board of Aldermen.
