McCaskill wavering on Cash for Clunkers

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The Senate is expected to approve more funding to extend the "Cash for Clunkers" program this week.

But the Democratic majority may not have the support of Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri. She says she's worried that the program may hurt General Motors and Chrysler, which may not have enough inventory on hand for car buyers.

"We've invested public money in two companies and I want to make sure that those two companies have a level playing field. It makes no sense for us to extend a program that might penalize the very companies that we just invested a boatload of money in. That's why I think we need to be careful about this," McCaskill said.

McCaskill says she's also concerned that a successful "Cash for Clunkers" program now could preempt a sustained recovery for the auto industry through next spring.
