Belleville, ill. – St. Clair County Jail officials say four prisoners are being treated with antibiotics after another round of staph infections.
Just two months ago, public health officials inspected the jail were reported in eight prisoners. All of those affected inmates recovered.
Staph is commonly carried on healthy people's skin or in their noses, and mostly causes mild infections like pimples. But it can be fatal if it spreads to the blood or goes untreated.
Assistant Superintendent Thomas Knapp says the prisoners are being treated with antibiotics and have received new linens and towels.
Jail personnel washed walls, floors and cell bars with disinfectant after the March outbreak. They say with hundreds of prisoners, it's hard to determine the bacteria's source.
