Missouri Democrats Trying For St. Louis Debate

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis – Democratic party officials in Missouri are still hoping to host a debate among the presidential contenders in St. Louis on Monday.

Leaders have been trying to convince the seven candidates to appear at the debate the night before the state's presidential primary.

But Democratic Party chairwoman May Scheve said only Joseph Lieberman has confirmed that he'll attend the event.

"I'm sorry I can't give you an exact, up to date, number of who has confirmed but we are very close on all of these candidates and they are taking it into serious consideration and jockeying their schedules around to be available on Monday night," Scheve said.

If candidates agree, the 90-minute debate will be held at the University of Missouri-St. Louis starting at 7 p.m.

A consortium of public and commercial radio and T-V stations have agreed to air the debate live.
