Missouri Group Launches Voter Education Campaign

By Kevin Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis – In an effort to avoid the problems that plagued the 2000 presidential election in St. Louis, a voting rights group is working to make sure every eligible Missourian can vote in November.

Monday, the Help Missouri Vote Coalition kicked off a statewide campaign to increase voter awareness and protect voters' rights.

The group's Kelly Anthony wants to see voter eligibility information placed online.

"If election authorities were to publish the criteria for who was being placed on the inactive voter list and who was being purged from the rolls, the public would have a much better sense of whether or not they were at risk for being removed from the active voter list," Anthony said.

Four years ago, hundreds of registered voters in St. Louis were turned away at the polls because of problems with the inactive voter list.
