St. Louis – Public defenders in Missouri have warned for years that they have too many cases.
This summer the State Public Defender's Office began turning away new cases in several court districts and put several more on notice. And Missouri's state auditor announced recently that she will review the public defender system.
Norman Lefstein is writing a book about caseloads and public defenders. He was dean of Indiana University's law school, and tells St. Louis Public Radio's Maria Altman the issue goes far beyond Missouri.
