Jefferson City, Mo. – People who gain weight from eating too many burgers and fries could not sue the restaurants, under a bill the Senate passed Tuesday.
The Senate accepted the House legislation on a 32-nothing vote, sending it to the governor's desk.
The bill is known as the "Commonsense Consumption Act." It would bar people from suing restaurants or manufacturers for weight gain, obesity or related health problems from eating their food.
Claims arising from alcohol consumption are excluded from the bill's restrictions.
Senator Chuck Gross of St. Charles says the measure is more a pre-emptive strike than a reaction to any current lawsuits.
Experts say Louisiana already has a law in effect banning such lawsuits, and at least 23 states are considering similar legislation this year.
