Missouri Supreme Court hears appeal in death row case

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

Jefferson City, Mo. – An appeal from a man on death row convicted in a murder that he videotaped goes before the Missouri Supreme Court this week.

Richard D. Davis, 45, was convicted in 2008 in Kansas City for the killing of Marsha Spicer.

Davis and his girlfriend, Dena Riley, videotaped the assault and prosecutors presented video excerpts and still photos at Davis' trial. Riley pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Davis claims showing duplicate images of the assault prejudiced jurors because of the images' "graphic, sexual, violent content."

Davis also contends he was denied the right to represent himself at trial.
