Jefferson City, MO – Missouri voters will decide this fall whether a ban on gay marriage should become part of the state constitution. In the final minutes of the session, the House voted to place the measure on the state-wide ballot. The resolution passed on 124-to-25 in the House. Earlier it cleared the Senate by a 26-to-6 vote. The question will go on the November ballot unless Governor Bob Holden decides to place it on the August primary ballot.
Missouri already has a law banning homosexual marriage. But some lawmakers are concerned that a judge could overturn the law. Voters will be asked to add one sentence to the constitution. It says: "That to be valid and recognized in this state, a marriage shall exist only between a man and a woman."
