St. Louis – Military personnel from Missouri who are in certain combat zones overseas can use the Internet to send in ballots this November.
Secretary of State Matt Blunt announced the change Wednesday.
Earlier this year, the Pentagon cancelled an Internet voting experiment because of security concerns.
But Blunt spokesman Spence Jackson says in this case, service members will need to have a paper ballot to start.
"They'll use a scanner to scan the ballot after it's been voted, and then they'll e-mail it as a .pdf file to the Department of Defense in Washington," Jackson said. "That person will then print it off then fax it directly to the county clerk for the soldier."
Jackson says the military has the equipment necessary to e-mail ballots, and the process will not cost the state anything.
Blunt, a Republican, is running for governor against Missouri State Auditor Claire McCaskill.
