St. Louis – Congressman Dick Gephardt of St. Louis says it would be a shame if a debate between the presidential candidates scheduled at Washington University next month does not take place.

President George Bush is reportedly considering skipping the debate, which would be in a town hall meeting format.

An advisor says they're concerned that the audience of independent voters might be infiltrated by partisans

Gephardt, who is co-chair of Kerry's campaign in Missouri, says that's no reason to cancel the event.

"I mean I think there is a legitimate way to get real undecided voters and make sure that they're not infiltrated by partisans, if that's the worry," Gephardt said. "But even if it were to happen, is that the end of the world? I mean, come on, these people are running for president. They should be able to answer the questions of partisans."

Washington University officials say they are continuing to make preparations for the debate, as scheduled, for Friday, October 8th.
