Mo. General Assembly to remain in session despite blizzard

The Missouri General Assembly will remain in session this week, despite the approaching winter storm that's predicted to dump lots of snow and ice across the state.

A number of lawmakers, including House Majority Floor Leader Tim Jones (R, Eureka), say that since they're already in Jefferson City, they might as well get some work done.

"I personally have no desire to get back on the road until this storm passes us by, so I intend on staying put," Jones said from the House floor.  "However, I will completely understand if any members feel, due to personal obligations or familial obligations, that they need to go home."

Several House and Senate committee meetings have been canceled.  And Senate Majority Floor Leader Tom Dempsey (R, St. Charles) says the committees that do meet will focus on bills that don't have public hearings scheduled.

"We don't want anyone to put their lives in danger getting here," Dempsey said.

Meanwhile, the Illinois General Assembly has canceled all legislative activity this week.
