More Than Bach at the Bach Society

A. Dennis Sparger, Music Director and Conductor of the Bach Society of Saint Louis, stopped by CITYSCAPE to preview the 60th Christmas Candlelight Concert at Powell Hall on Tuesday, December 21st when internationally acclaimed soprano Christine Brewer joins the chorus and orchestra in three works.

Ironically, the  capacity crowd on Tuesday won't hear a single Bach work.   Instead, they'll hear a program including Francis Poulenc's Gloria, a selection of traditional carols, and, on the humorous side, Craig Courtney's A Musicological Journey of the 12 Days of Christmas.  Concert-goers should come ready to raise their voices as the Bach Society  continues its tradition of inviting the audience to join in singing Hark, the Herald Angels Sing and O Come, All Ye Faithful.  And no Bach Society Christmas program is complete without the traditional Candlelight Procession.

In his discussion with Steve Potter, A. Dennis Sparger had high praise for Christine Brewer, who was a regular soloist with the Bach Society early in her career.  Brewer talked further about her association with the organization in a later segment of CITYSCAPE.

Listen to the entire interviewto hear clips of Poulenc's Gloria, the  Sussex Carol and selections from Craig Courtney's A Musicological Journey of the 12 Days of Christmas.
