Dog found, search continues for Missouri Highway Patrolman

Several law enforcement agencies continue to search Wednesday for a missing Missouri Highway patrolman who disappeared while on flood patrol duty in northwest Missouri. The Highway Patrol says 46-year-old Fred Guthrie, Jr. and his K-9, Reed, were part of the water patrol division near Big Lake.

Searchers discovered Reed's body yesterday afternoon near Missouri Highway 118 about 100 yards from where Guthrie's truck and boat were found Monday. The dog was found after sandbags were placed where the water meets the highway, creating a deep hole where the highway is washing away. Sergeant Jerry Callahan with the State Water Patrol says multiple agencies are working on the recovery .

"Right now the search is still ongoing," said Callahan. "A number of agencies along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol aircraft and water division is actively conducting the searches and will continue to do so."

Patrol spokesman Sheldon Lyon says there is a current in the flood waters near Big Lake and several thousand acres in Holt County remain underwater.
