Nation's biggest cement plant opens in Missouri

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis – The largest cement plant in the nation has opened in Missouri, about 50 miles south of St. Louis in Ste. Genevieve County. The $1 billion plant was built by Holcim. Production began Monday.

Demand for cement is down because of the economic downturn. Holcim recently closed plants in Michigan and Clarksville, Mo., and suspended production at plants in Iowa and Mississippi. But the company says it's looking forward to better times.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources says the plant will emit thousands of tons of pollutants each year. But the agency also says the plant's permits comply with air quality standards.
