NCAA places UMSL on probation

By Maria Altman, St. Louis Public Radio

St. Louis, MO. – The NCAA has placed the University of Missouri-St. Louis on probation for two years, citing wagering violations within the men's golf program.

The infractions took place from 2004 to 2008, while Dustin Ashby was head coach.

Ashby resigned in August of last year.

UM-St. Louis spokesman Bob Samples says the entire athletics program will be on probation.

"But let me point out that it does not affect scholarship, our ability to participate in post-season play, or the status of our student athletes, so the university has decided not to appeal the ruling and will abide by all the conditions of the probation," Samples said.

The NCAA says the head golf coach paid an entry fee and played fantasy football and baseball for prizes, violating NCAA rules on sports wagering.

The coach also bought and operated an online fantasy football business and hired the former volunteer coach, who acted as commissioner.

Samples says the university has hired a full-time compliance officer to educate student athletes and coaches about NCAA policy.
