New laws take effect in Missouri Saturday

By Marshall Griffin, St. Louis Public Radio

Jefferson City, Mo. – Dozens of new laws take effect Saturday (August 28th) in Missouri.

One in particular creates new ethics rules: It restricts committee-to-committee money transfers and allows the Missouri Ethics Commission to launch its own investigations.

Even though Governor Jay Nixon signed the bill into law, he says it's still sorely lacking.

"Politicians should not be able to hire each other as consultants," Nixon said. "That measure should have also been part of the legislative effort, taking campaign dollars and hiring another politician to give you advice, I don't think, is in the highest and best way that democracy gets effectively handled."

Nixon also continues to push for campaign contribution limits, which lawmakers did not include in the new law.

Other new laws taking effect include tougher prosecution of drunk drivers, a ban on the sale of synthetic marijuana, and expanding the information women must be provided before having an abortion.
