New Mississippi River Bridge To Open In February

Commuters, start your engines. The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge will be open to traffic starting on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014.

Commonly known by some as the 'Stan Span,' the bridge has been under construction since 2010. The name of the bridge was made official in July, and was a compromise between Missouri and Illinois lawmakers.

Workers connected the two sides of the bridge - which originated on the Missouri and Illinois banks of the Mississippi River - back in July. The span will carry Interstate 70 over the river.

MoDOT says the public will have a chance to walk on the bridge and "see it up close" on Feb. 8, the day before it opens to traffic, though the department is still working on exact details.

The $229.5 million Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge is one of 37 projects that make up the $700 million New Mississippi River Bridge project, according to MoDOT.
