St. Louis – Highway officials in Missouri hope a new public service announcement will get drivers to slow down in construction zones.
The Department of Transportation has produced new television and radio ads that feature part of a TV news interview with MoDot worker Ken Hoierman.
In the interview, Hoierman talks about work zone safety. But MoDot spokesman Jeff Briggs says a week after it was recorded, Hoierman was killed by a motorist in a St. Louis construction zone.
"We've taken that story and put it into a form that can be played on television and radio and remind people about just how it hits close to home and how important it is to be careful in those work zones," Briggs said. "It's a very dramatic spot that we hope will get people's attention."
Hoierman was the third MoDot worker to be killed in a highway work zone this year.
