St. Louis – Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon is suing several companies whom he says are inundating Missouri small business owners with unsolicited faxes.

Nixon is suing several U.S. and British companies for sending unwanted faxes in violation of state and federal consumer protection laws.

Nixon wants the courts to issue injunctions to force the companies to stop and is also seeking fines against them. Nixon says the companies are charging consumers without their consent.

"Missouri consumers are saying 'please don't fax us,' they send their notices back to these companies, the companies fax them," Nixon said. "We think it's wrong and violates Missouri consumer protection law, and that's why we filed these actions today."

Nixon says the offending companies could face fines of up to $500 per violation.
