Nixon Sues EPA Over Lead Rules

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis – Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon is suing the Environmental Protection Agency, saying it is ignoring mandated reviews of air quality for lead, potentially threatening the health of Missourians.

The suit filed today in federal court in St. Louis seeks to force the government agency to comply with the Clean Air Act by reviewing the air quality standards for lead.

The Clean Air Act mandates that the EPA review the national ambient air quality standards every five years. Nixon says the government has failed to conduct a review since December of 1990.

An EPA spokesman did not return a phone call seeking comment.

High levels of lead have been found in some Missouri communities. Lead poisoning can cause brain damage and other health problems for children.
