No more suppression of bacteria reports, says Department of Natural Resources

By KWMU

St. Louis – Governor Jay Nixon said the Missouri Department of Natural Resources was wrong to withhold a report on unsafe E. coli bacteria levels in the Lake of the Ozarks.

The DNR said from now on, test results will be made public as soon as they’re available.

Just after Memorial Day, the agency suppressed a report about unsafe E. coli levels in the lake over fears it would hurt business there.

Department Director Mark Templeton said in statement to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the agency delayed the report because inspectors were seeking more rainfall data.

The agency said runoff from heavy rains in May led to the high bacteria counts.
