Alton, Ill. – Steelworkers Monday returned to the old Laclede Steel plant in Alton for the first time in almost two years.
A group of local investors formed a company to buy the plant out of bankruptcy. They paid $1 million. More than two-dozen workers reported for work Monday.
Crews at the new Alton Steel will work for now to get the plant back to running order. The hope is to have about 350 employees within two years.
