Overnight rain sets record

By Rachel Lippmann, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The inch of rain that fell at Lambert Airport last night made 2008 the wettest year on record for the St. Louis area.

The old record, set in 1982, was 54.97 inches. To date this year, the region has seen 55.97 inches.

Wes Browning is the meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service's St. Louis forecast office. He says up to two more inches could fall in the next few days.

"The ground's fairly saturated right now, and that could lead to a lot of runoff, and we could see some localized flooding," he said.

Temperatures could reach 60 degrees on Friday, Browning said, bringing up "a lot of warm, moist air and a possibility of thunderstorms, maybe even severe weather, on Friday night."

Browning says the Weather Service's three month predictions show above-normal precipitation continuing into spring. He says that could cause some river flooding - just like this year.
