Overtime Bill Heads to Blagojevich

By AP/KWMU

Springfield, Ill – A bill to keep the status quo on overtime pay in Illinois is headed to the governor's desk.

The state Senate Wednesday voted 36-to-19 for a measure that would maintain the current overtime rules for more than 375-thousand Illinois employees.

New federal standards set to go into effect this week would keep certain executive or administrative employees from earning extra compensation for overtime hours worked.

The Illinois House voted 82-to-32 to bypass the federal rules and keep the existing overtime rules Tuesday, and the Senate followed suit Wednesday.

Supporters say the bill gives fair compensation to employees and will protect workers' rights.

Opponents argue the move will drive employers out of the state.
