Owners of landfill report high methane levels

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

Arnold, Mo. – Owners of a Jefferson County landfill that stopped accepting waste more than 30 years ago are notifying nearby property owners of possible increases in methane gas.

Valley Disposal oversees the site in Arnold. Monitoring wells showed elevated levels of methane. As a result, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources says owners of 94 neighboring properties are being notified by letter this week.

The company is offering to add meters at homes to monitor for methane. Homeowners are encouraged to call 911 if they smell a natural gas odor.

Last week, more than 100 property owners in Maryland Heights were notified after a long-closed landfill there also tested high for methane.
