Pfizer to lay off 600 in St. Louis

By Maria Altman, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – Pfizer announced Monday the company will lay off 600 employees at its St. Louis-area facility.

That will leave about 400 employees at the pharmaceutical giant's Chesterfield Village Research Center.

Pfizer spokesman Rick Chambers says the company is consolidating from 20 research centers down to five and nine specialized centers following last month's acquisition of Wyeth.

Chambers says St. Louis will be one of the specialized centers.

"The change we announced is that St. Louis will be a global center for bio-therapeutics research focusing on later stages of developing protein-based medicines," Chambers said. "Also our indications discovering research group that looks for new uses of existing medicines will be located here."

The research in St. Louis on inflammation will move to Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Chambers says the layoffs will take place through next year.

Pfizer will also sell the Chesterfield Village Research Center back to Monsanto for $435 million and will lease space.
