Police: Man Hit Woman Because She's Black

University City, Mo. – Police say a man who hit a woman with his car did it because the woman is black.

Steve Johnson is being held on assault charges. Police say he drove his car onto a sidewalk in University City on Tuesday and hit a 56-year old woman. She's expected to recover.

University City Police Captain Ernest Green says Johnson, who is white, told investigators he struck the woman because she was black, but says the man used a derogatory term.

The man also reportedly told investigators he was acting on instructions from Jesus, who he said was riding with him in his car. He allegedly told them another person he called "Bad Steven" was in the car as well. The woman is hospitalized but expected to recover. Johnson, a 47-year-old St. Peters resident, is being held by police on assault and armed criminal action charges.
