Jefferson City, Mo. –

Police in Kansas City say Missouri Governor Jay Nixon was the intended target of a man charged with stabbing a college official on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department says Casey Brezik mistook a dean at Penn Valley Community College for the governor, who had scheduled a press conference there.

Governor Nixon had not yet arrived and the event was cancelled. He had little to say about the incident during a conference call later that day.

"Until the investigation is completed, I wouldn't want to make any other further comments, other than to say that our thoughts and prayers go out to the dean and his family," Nixon said. "I think the best thing is to let the investigators investigate what was the reason that this occurred."

The Governor's Office has had no further comment since then, and Public safety officials also won't comment on whether the governor's security detail has been beefed up.

The victim, Albert Dimmitt, is reported to be in fair condition at a Kansas City area hospital.

Meanwhile, the parents of the suspect say their son has a history of mental illness.
