Postal workers in St. Louis protest consolidation plan

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis – Postal workers in the St. Louis area spent their lunch hours on the informational picket line Thursday.

They are warning of long mail delivery delays if a Postal Service consolidation plan goes through.

The agency wants to consolidate postal facilities in order to offset higher fuel and employee costs.

But Tony Harris, vice-president of the St. Louis local of the American Postal Workers Union, said that is a bad idea.

"If local mail processing is moved to a central processing plant, that means that the local community will probably have their mail delayed by one to two days, possibly up to one week," Harris said.

Harris said his union local is covered by a no-layoff clause, so the consolidation would not affect jobs in St. Louis.

But he said smaller postal facilities in outlying areas could face layoffs.
