Quinn cuts $1.4 billion from state budget

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

Springfield, Ill. – Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed a new state budget that cuts spending and warned that further cuts are likely.

The Democrat said the new budget reduces spending by $1.4 billion as Illinois grapples with the biggest deficit in its history.

But Quinn says he's also likely to impose further cuts as the fiscal year goes by. He wouldn't say which agencies are likely to feel the impact.

Quinn says he's doing his best to protect government services that help the economy, schools, health and public safety.

Illinois has a roughly $13 billion deficit. It's being addressed through spending cuts, borrowing and delaying payment of bills.
