Wildwood, MO – Recent rainstorms that one might expect to fill a lake appear to have caused a lake to disappear in suburban Wildwood.
Millions of gallons of water vanished into a sinkhole at the bottom of a 23-acre lake earlier this week. The lake is in a subdivision called The Harbors at Lake Chesterfield
Water in the man-made lake began draining rapidly last weekend. By midweek, the lake had disappeared, leaving behind a big, muddy indentation and a crack in its bottom.
Geologist Dave Taylor says recent storms probably caused that sinkhole. He says parts of Missouri contain limestone in the ground that cracks and dissolves when it becomes drenched.
