Red light camera ban advances in Missouri Senate

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

Jefferson City, Mo. – The Missouri Senate has added a statewide ban on red-light traffic cameras to a broad transportation bill.

Republican Jim Lembke of St. Louis has tried for years to ban the cameras. Senators approved his amendment by a 23-8 vote Monday, but Senate leaders later voiced skepticism about its chances of staying in the bill.

The measure still needs final votes in the Senate and House.

Senators also added an amendment to end mandatory vehicle inspections every two years.

Another provision would expand Missouri's ban on texting while driving to motorists of all ages. As it stands the law applies only to young drivers.
